Gettysburg, PA — The Adams County Arts Council (ACAC) invites the community to join family, friends, students, and fellow artists in celebrating the life and legacy of longtime artist member, pottery instructor, and friend Jack G. Handshaw on Saturday, July 25, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The Celebration of Life will include light refreshments, displays of artifacts from Jack’s life, remarks from guest speakers, and a special pottery sale featuring his final completed works.

Jack was an incredibly talented potter whose artistic gifts and generous spirit left an enduring mark on the Adams County community. As an instructor at ACAC, he inspired students of all ages, helping to shape generations of artists through his engaging classes and beloved pottery camps.

We were honored to present Jack’s “Retrospective” exhibit in September of last year, which showcased not only his ceramic talents, but his passion for all arts, including painting and poetry. His work was also frequently featured in ACAC’s Annual Juried Art Exhibition. This year, one of his ceramic pieces was featured in the exhibit and won the Judie Butterfield award.

Jack graciously gifted all of his completed pottery pieces to the Adams County Arts Council. These unique works will be available for purchase during the Celebration of Life. Proceeds from the sale will go to both ACAC and a fund for a free pottery summer camp scholarship.

“We are deeply honored to care for Jack’s final creations and to help ensure they find loving homes, where his artistic legacy can continue to be appreciated and enjoyed.”

Orchards are another of my favorite Adams County photography topics. This photo was taken just after sunrise on a cool spring morning with fog filling the bottoms of the valleys. I found the fog and the dandelions to be perfect complements to the rows of blossoms.

Gettysburg, PA —The Adams County Arts Council will celebrate three art exhibitions with an opening reception for Christian Parker, Nancy Rehm, and Spencer Dofflemyer on First Friday, July 10, 5:00-7 pm at the Arts Education Center, located at 125 S. Washington Street, Gettysburg.  The reception is free and open to the public.

Chris Parker has been intrigued by stained glass for most of his adult life. He started exploring stained glass approximately 10 years ago with a local art studio. For two and a half months he was taught panel construction which sparked his passion to create his own art! Chris has been teaching at the Adams County Arts Council for 4 years and has now expanded to 7 different locations, across 4 counties in south central PA.

Nancy Rehm is originally from Gettysburg, and now lives in Dallas, PA with her husband, David. She recently retired as a teacher after 31 years, most of them working in the Upper Adams School District. Nancy studied art and theatrical design at Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Although she has worked in many different types of media, oil pastel is her preferred medium because of its direct, tactile quality.

Ceramicist Spencer Dofflemyer is an independent artist from Pennsylvania who has worked in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia.  He’s a graduate of Temple University – Tyler School of Arts, and has a robust portfolio in ceramics, visual design, and gallery work, with many solo and group show exhibitions to his credit.  He strives to facilitate community engagement. Spencer runs the ACAC Pottery Studio and teaches students of all ages!

Hanover, PA — Downtown Hanover will once again come alive with creativity on Friday, July 3, from 5:00–8:00 PM, as the First Friday Art Walk returns with a vibrant lineup of regional artists and participating businesses.

Organized and hosted by Little Fox Coffee & Books and proudly sponsored by Main Street Hanover, First Friday Art Walks are a monthly celebration of local art and community. On the first Friday of each month, downtown Hanover businesses transform into gallery spaces showcasing rotating artists and exhibits, inviting visitors to explore, connect, and enjoy an evening of art, culture, and small-town charm.

Launched in August 2025, the Art Walk was created to highlight local talent while encouraging residents and visitors to discover new favorite shops and gathering places. The event is free and open to the public, with no tickets required.

This month’s Art Walk will feature a diverse collection of artists and interactive experiences throughout downtown:

• Aldus Brewing will be hosting Barbara DeUgarte. Barbara has had an interest in art since their childhood through their career in medicine. Most of her free time throughout her life has been spent in the studying and practicing of different forms of art. Barbara has learned from many different artists and has incorporated their teachings into her own technique that she has worked on for many years. She uses the inspiration of the battlefield and surrounding countryside for many of her paintings. Most of her work centers on the effects of light on a form and color and how this can be used to elicit feeling in the viewer.
• Fat Bat Brewing presents artist Riley Slee as part of First Friday Artwalk. Riley specializes in fashion design, fiber, and fashion illustration. She strives to create unique garments and accessories that push boundaries and promote unabashed self-expression. She incites confidence and fosters community through her work. From finely tailored menswear to counterculture streetwear, her range of design knows no bounds.
• Hanover Area Arts Guild will be hosting their “Red, White, and Blue” event in recognition of America’s 250th birthday. They will be featuring an exhibit of members’ work using the red, white, and/or blue color scheme. Visitors will have the opportunity to vote for a People’s Choice award winner so go cast your ballot! The art is on display through August 1st.
• Little Fox Coffee & Books will be hosting local ceramicist Rebekah Brown. Rebekah’s work consists of a variety of mugs, plates, vases, and another ceramic homeware. Her work is inspired by mother nature and the unique magic that can be found in the mundane. She grew up loving all forms of art and found ceramics in high school. She dedicates enormous amounts of time, energy and love into her art, and it is her hope that you will feel this when you take a sip from your mug or put flowers in your vase. Little Fox Coffee & Books will also be hosting local artist Eric Heinrich. Eric creates art using subjects that they choose and explore intuitively. They are a self-taught artist who always drew and painted when they were young but somehow drifted away from art. They have been rediscovering art for the last 5 years and focusing most of their energy on exploring all aspects of the process. Much of their work consists of upcycling unwanted vinyl records by painting them with acrylic. They are drawn toward abstract art and surrealistic themes.
• Sacred Heart Tattoo will be hosting Crystal Hartlaub. They are a local artist working in watercolor, acrylic, and pour painting. Her work explores the meeting point of abstraction and nature, where control gives way to flow, and texture becomes memory. Each piece is a balance of intention and chance.
• The Gallery at The Old Post Office will feature twenty-seven artworks on the theme of fiction, where things may not be as they seem. Up one floor, Andy Smith’s Visual Studio will be open with numerous clay monoprints.
• The Serpent’s Key is is hosting artist Luisa Carella. Luisa is a self-taught artist! She mostly paints in acrylic but also has a love and interest for pottery and mosaic. Luisa is fascinated by Mother Nature and studying how her colors interact in real life. She paints a lot of animals, and still lives, although recently, she’s been working on a more narrative style. Luisa wants to create pieces that say something about the world around us, as well as the elaborate world within.

Hi everyone, I’m Andrew Muenzfeld, a landscape photographer based in Gettysburg. I love capturing the beauty of Adams County, and I’ll be sharing some of my favorite shots over the next few months. I’m starting off with a late-spring sunrise photo along Rock Creek at a spot I often return to. I hope you enjoy the view!

Gettysburg, PA — The Gettysburg Choral Society is pleased to announce the appointment of Ethan J. Draper as Assistant Director. Draper joins the organization as it prepares for its tenth anniversary season and brings with him a strong background in choral conducting, organ performance, and sacred music.

Founded in 2017, The Gettysburg Choral Society is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization composed of auditioned singers dedicated to pursuing excellence in choral music performance. Under the direction of John McKay, the ensemble presents seasonal concerts and special events throughout the region.

Draper currently serves as Minister of Music and Organist at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hanover, Pennsylvania, home to one of the ten largest pipe organs in the world, Austin Organs Opus 1215. There he leads a vibrant music ministry that includes vocal and handbell choirs and a concert series featuring the church’s renowned instrument.

A graduate of Lebanon Valley College, Draper studied Sacred Music and Organ Performance with Dr. Shelly Moorman-Stahlman and previously studied organ with Brenda Arnold Day. He also studied conducting with Dr. Kyle Zeuch and voice with Professor Jonathan Walker-VanKuren. While at Lebanon Valley College, he served as collaborative pianist for the College Choir and held leadership positions as president of both the college’s Organ Guild and its student chapter of the American Choral Directors Association.

Before accepting his position at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Draper served as Organ Scholar at Market Square Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg and was Choral Conducting Scholar for the Harrisburg Choral Society during its 2023–2024 season.

Draper was named the 2026 Presser Foundation Scholar at Lebanon Valley College and has received several other honors, including the Robert W. Smith Award in Music, the Elizabeth May Meyer Award, and the Pickwell Memorial Music Award. In 2025, he was awarded the prestigious Brokaw Grant from the American Bach Society, presented annually to one undergraduate nationwide, enabling him to conduct research at the Riemenschneider Bach Institute at Baldwin Wallace University. His scholarly interests center on the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

An active member of the American Guild of Organists, Draper serves on the National Committee for Young Organists and as Sub-Dean of the Harrisburg Chapter. He also holds the Service Playing Certification from the AGO.

“Ethan’s musical gifts, leadership abilities, and enthusiasm for choral music make him a wonderful addition to our artistic staff,” said Artistic Director John McKay. “We are excited to welcome him to The Gettysburg Choral Society and look forward to working together as we continue to build upon the ensemble’s commitment to artistic excellence.”

In addition to his new responsibilities as Assistant Director, Draper will be featured as organist during portions of The Gettysburg Choral Society’s Christmas concerts, “Gloria in excelsis Deo,” on Saturday, December 5, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 6, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of United Lutheran Seminary, 61 Seminary Ridge, Gettysburg. He will accompany several selections and perform organ repertoire as part of the festive program.

The Gettysburg Choral Society is also welcoming new singers for its tenth anniversary season. Auditions are held by appointment and are open to adults with previous choral experience and music-reading ability. Remaining audition dates are Saturday, July 18, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and Monday, August 17, from 7:00–9:00 p.m. Rehearsals begin September 14.
