Hanover, PA — Downtown Hanover has welcomed a new locally owned business with a mission that goes beyond selling groceries. M & J Discount Groceries, located at 222 E. Chestnut Street, Hanover, PA 17331, is providing affordable food, drinks, dog food, and cat food to help make quality products more accessible to members of the Hanover community.

Main Street Hanover Marketing & Administration Coordinator Alex Brown recently visited M & J Discount Groceries and sat down with the owners to learn more about their story, their goals, and their vision for their new downtown storefront.

The business is rooted in a family desire to serve others. The owners previously operated a business called M&J’s Surplus before relocating due to economic circumstances. When the opportunity arose to open in downtown Hanover, the location stood out as a way to bring discounted groceries directly to people who need them.

“We wanted to get quality, discounted food to the people in downtown Hanover, as we noticed that there is a real need for it,” the owner explained.

His daughter echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the importance of accessibility for individuals and families who may have difficulty traveling to larger grocery stores.

The family’s mission is simple: to help ensure that people in the community have access to food, regardless of their financial circumstances.

“Eventually we want to pass this down to our daughter,” the owner shared. “But also, we just want to help and give back. We want to make sure that no matter what, people in this area are able to eat.”

That commitment was evident during Main Street Hanover’s visit, as customers were already shopping throughout the store. The owners shared that business has been going well and expressed how meaningful it has been to see customers come through their doors.

For the family, some of the most rewarding moments have been seeing customers’ reactions when they first enter the store.

“I would say seeing the look on people’s faces when they walk through the door,” the owner’s wife said when asked about her favorite memory so far.

M & J Discount Groceries currently offers a variety of discounted grocery items, including a selection of recognizable name-brand products, as well as beverages and pet food. The owners have plans to continue expanding their offerings, with hopes of adding more freezers, dairy products, and a clearance section in the future.

Their planned clearance section will focus on providing extremely low-cost food options, furthering the family’s goal of making groceries accessible to as many people as possible.

“We are there to help, and we want to see the community thrive,” the family shared.

Grand Opening Celebration

M & J Discount Groceries will officially celebrate its grand opening on Saturday, September 19, 2026. The community is invited to stop by, meet the owners, explore the store, and show their support for this new downtown business.
