Music, Gettysburg! Presents “Bowers, Day, and Hochmiller” October 25 2026

Gettysburg, PA – Music, Gettysburg! will present flutist Teresa Bowers, classical guitarist James Day and
soprano Susan Hochmiller in an afternoon of chamber music on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at 4 p.m. The
concert will take place at the Church of the Abiding Presence on the Gettysburg campus of United Lutheran
Seminary, 147 Seminary Ridge. The concert is free and open to everyone.
Bringing together three musicians with close ties to Gettysburg College’s Sunderman Conservatory of Music,
the program explores poetry, love, humor and the night sky through the distinctive sounds of voice, flute and
classical guitar.
The program opens with Philadelphia composer Eric Sessler’s Good Words to You, a song cycle for soprano and
guitar on poems by John Ciardi. Written for Day and soprano Judith Bettina in 2008, the work received its
premiere in Philadelphia in 2009.
Bowers and Day will perform Frank Ferko’s Constellations, five pieces for flute and guitar inspired by
constellations visible in the Northern Hemisphere: Andromeda, Gemini, Orion, Virgo and Aquarius. The
program also includes Swiss composer Frank Martin’s Drey Minnelieder, a set of three love songs; two songs
by Jacques Ibert for soprano and flute; and Seymour Barab’s humorous Bagatelles for soprano, flute and
guitar.
Bowers is a founding member of the Sunderman Woodwind Quintet and a former flute faculty member at
Sunderman Conservatory, Gettysburg College. Her career includes orchestral and chamber performances,
artistic director of Bel Voce Chamber Choir, Music, Gettysburg! Festival Choir and leadership in church music.
Day’s career as a performer, scholar and teacher has taken him to venues and institutions in Europe, Australia
and across the United States. Chamber music collaborations, particularly those featuring flute and voice, have
been a central part of his work.
Hochmiller is an accomplished soprano whose performances span chamber music, art song, oratorio and
opera. She has performed in Italy and throughout the United States and is the author of So You Want to Sing
Chamber Music: A Guide for Professionals.
