Scout builds flag retirement boxes for local organizations
Chapter 1, Title 4 of the United States Code (U.S. Flag Code) states “When a flag is so tattered that it no longer fits to serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be disposed of in a dignified manner, preferably by
burning.”
Seth Smyth, from Boy Scout Troop 73 of Gettysburg Pennsylvania has constructed and distributed 3 American Flag Retirement boxes around the Gettysburg area as part of his Eagle Scout Project to help with this. With the cooperation of American Legion Post 202 of Gettysburg, flags that are placed in these retirement boxes will be collected during the second week of June, so that they can be properly retired each year on Flag Day, June 14th, through the American Legion. If you have a flag or flags that are no longer acceptable for service and you would like to have them disposed of in a proper manner, please place it in one of the boxes, and it will be treated with honor and respect and properly retired.
These American Flag Retirement Boxes are found in Gettysburg at the World War II American Experience on Crooked Creek Road, Redding’s Hardware on Franklin Street, and American Legion Post 202 on East Middle Street.
