Gettysburg Borough Unveils 13 Original Colony Flags in Lincoln Square as Part of America250th Commemoration

Original 13 Colonies Flag Display at the Gettysburg Square

Gettysburg, PA – On Thursday, May 7, 2026, a special installation of the 13 original colony flags of the United States took place on Lincoln Square, marking a significant milestone in Gettysburg and Adams County’s year-long commemoration of America250.

The display represents the original thirteen colonies during America’s Revolutionary era (Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island) and serves as a visual tribute to the nation’s founding. The installation underscores the community’s commitment to honoring 250 years of American history.

The flags will remain on display throughout the summer and into the fall, culminating in their role as a centerpiece during the Lincoln at Gettysburg event the week of November 16th – 20th, 2026.

The flags are a collaborative initiative between the Gettysburg Garden Club and the Borough of Gettysburg, reflecting a shared dedication to civic pride, historical preservation, and community engagement.

“The Garden Club will plant red, white and blue flowers on Lincoln Square to celebrate our Country’s 250th anniversary. The Club is pleased to have our residents and tourists enjoy our beautiful gardens and the flags of the thirteen original colonies,” said Pat Thorsen, President, Gettysburg Garden Club.

“Gettysburg is uniquely positioned to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary in a way that connects our nation’s founding to its defining moments,” said Charles Gable, Gettysburg Borough Manager. “In addition to this flag installation, many organizations are planning a full calendar of events throughout the year, including expanded Fourth of July celebrations, living history programs, special exhibits, and community-wide events that invite both residents and visitors to engage with our shared history in meaningful ways.”

The installation is expected to draw residents and visitors alike, offering a meaningful and visually striking reminder of the nation’s origins in one of America’s most historic towns.

Community members and visitors are encouraged to visit Lincoln Square to experience the display and participate in the broader America250 commemorative events taking place throughout the year in Gettysburg and across Adams County.
