Gettysburg, PA— Join Eisenhower National Historic Site (NHS) staff for our annual World War II Weekend from September 19 to 21. The focus of this year’s event will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory in World War II by focusing on the people, events, and legacies of 1945. Park rangers, guest speakers, living historians, and partner organizations will bring the events of 1945 to life through three days of interactive programming, tours, and activities for visitors of all ages.
Programming begins the evening of Friday, September 19, and continues throughout the day on Saturday September 20 and Sunday September 21. Due to an abundance of caution, Eisenhower NHS will be closed on Friday September 19 during the set-up of the on-site living history camp.
Event highlights include:
Notable guest speakers and historians: Pulitzer-Prize winning historian and author Rick Atkinson will speak Friday evening at the Gettysburg National Military Park (NMP) Museum and Visitor Center (free tickets are required, see website for details). On Saturday and Sunday, speakers at Eisenhower NHS will focus on a variety of topics including General George C. Marshall, the U.S. Marine Corps, the island of Iwo Jima, the Women’s Army Corps, surviving the Kamikaze, the flight of the Enola Gay, and a conversation with Susan Eisenhower, granddaughter of Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower on the afternoon of Sunday, September 21. A full list of speakers and topics is available on the park website.
Ranger-Guided Walking Tours of WWII burials in Gettysburg National Cemetery: At 5 pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, park rangers will offer guided walking tours of Gettysburg National Cemetery, exploring the stories of the 590 fallen World War II soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines buried there. Each evening’s program will have a different focus. Friday night’s theme is stories from the Pacific Theater. Saturday night will focus on casualties from the European Theater. Sunday night will cover those who fought and died in 1945 at the war’s end. Meet at the Taneytown Road entrance to Gettysburg National Cemetery.
1945 Living History Camp at Eisenhower NHS: Visit American and Allied units, as well as groups depicting life on the Homefront, to explore the people and events of 1945. Park rangers will lead guided walking tours of the living history camp throughout the weekend.
Family Activities and Programs at Eisenhower NHS: Kids can pick up a family activity booklet when they arrive, take part in activities throughout the camp, and visit the Family Tent for a special World War II-themed prize.
Special 1945 Museum Exhibits: Visit the Gettysburg NMP Museum and Visitor Center to see exhibits from Naval History and Heritage Command, U.S. Museum of the Navy, the National Museum of the Marine Corps, and Eisenhower NHS. These exhibits explore the people, events, and legacies of 1945, including baseball during World War II.
Eisenhower Home Tours: Free tours of the only home that Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower ever owned are available on both Saturday and Sunday of World War II Weekend.

How to visit Eisenhower National Historic Site during World War II Weekend:
Weather permitting, free on-site parking for passenger vehicles only will be available at Eisenhower NHS in a farm field accessible from Emmitsburg Road, Business Route 15. For GPS, use 250 Eisenhower Farm Road.
Eisenhower NHS will have accessible parking on-site throughout the weekend.

Gettysburg, PA – Gettysburg native and Hall of Fame pitcher Edward S. “Eddie” Plank will be honored in his hometown on Saturday, August 30, and Sunday, August 31, 2025 by Gettysburg History. In recognition of the 150th anniversary of his birth, Plank’s legacy will be celebrated with a series of events.
The weekend kicks off with a panel featuring former Major League Baseball players Sid Bream, Jeff Manto, and Cody Eppley at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 30. All three are Pennsylvania natives, with Bream hailing from Carlisle, Manto from Bristol Township, and Eppley from Dillsburg. The discussion, moderated by historian Tom McMillan, will feature the panelists sharing their personal stories, career highlights, and the challenges and triumphs of their journeys in professional baseball. Later in the day, the public is invited to attend a free screening of Ken Burns’ Baseball: The Faith of Fifty Million People at 3 p.m.
On Sunday, August 31, the official anniversary of Plank’s birth, a permanent plaque will be dedicated in his honor. The public is invited to attend the brief dedication ceremony at 1 p.m. Special guests will include Plank’s grandson, Edward S. Plank III, and Adams County historian Timothy H. Smith. Following the ceremony, author and historian Lawrence Knorr, Ph.D., will give a presentation based on his book, Gettysburg Eddie, that covers Plank’s life story from his early days in Gettysburg to his record-setting career to his brief retirement prior to his passing. The talk will be followed by a book signing with Knorr, joined by Plank’s grandson.
The weekend’s festivities will all take place at the Adams County Historical Society, 625 Biglerville Road, Gettysburg. As a special benefit, all Adams County youth 17 and under receive free admission to all Eddie Plank Weekend events. Chambersburg, PA — After 12 successful years of hosting the popular Empty Bowls Fundraiser in Gettysburg with the Spring 2026 event already being planned, The Gleaning Project of South Central Community Action Programs (SCCAP) is proud to announce the inaugural Empty Bowls – Franklin County Fundraiser, to be held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at King Street Church in Chambersburg.
This meaningful community event brings together residents, artists, businesses, and hunger-relief advocates to raise awareness about food insecurity while supporting The Gleaning Project’s vital mission. Attendees will enjoy a meal of a variety of soups, breads, and desserts. Each ticketholder will receive a beautiful pottery bowl to take home as a reminder of the event and the empty bowls in our communities.
Tickets are $20 each and will go on sale September 2, 2025.

The Gleaning Project works throughout Adams and Franklin Counties to recover surplus produce from local farms and gardens—fresh food that would otherwise go to waste—and redistributes it to community organizations and families in need. In 2024 alone, the program gleaned and shared over 900,000 pounds of produce.
“This new event in Franklin County marks an exciting expansion of our efforts to engage the community in fighting hunger and food waste,” said Cheryl Brown, SCCAP’s Resource Development Director. “We are thrilled to bring this impactful fundraiser to Chambersburg and welcome everyone to be part of the solution.”
Sponsorship opportunities are available at all levels, offering businesses and individuals the chance to support a local initiative that feeds thousands of families each year. Sponsors will be recognized at the event, in promotional materials, and through SCCAP’s outreach channels.

Chambersburg, PA – Foot of the Mountain Farm and CSA participated in the USDA Great American Farmers Market, a week-long celebration of farming, family, and food. Situated just behind the Washington Monument, the commemoration provided the Varisano family of Franklin County PA–owners of Foot of the Mountain Farm and CSA–an opportunity to experience the nation’s capitol as they shared the importance of farming and fresh food with visitors to the farmers market set up on the National Mall. Among the visitors to the Foot of the Mountain Farm stand were Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
The Great American Farmer’s Market included fifty representatives from twenty-six states and spotlighted and celebrated the importance of agriculture in the United States. It is the first celebration and was held during the first week of August to coincide with National Farmers Market Week. Both underscore the importance of farming–past, present, and future–to the United States. The initiative is part of the national recognition of America’s 250th birthday.
Foot of the Mountain Farm is located in the northern tip of Franklin County in the small village of Concord in Fannett Township. The produce of the farm can be found at the North Square Farmers Market on Saturdays in Fort Chambers Park from May to October in downtown chambersburg. Foot of the Mountain also distributes at farmers markets in Adams and Cumberland Counties.

Chambersburg, PA – Nearly 5000 people previewed Franklin County’s Bell Across PA, a fiberglass replica inspired by the Liberty Bell, as it meandered the two-mile route of the Greencastle Old Home Week Parade last week. Artist Andrea Finch and living history portrayers from frontier, Civil War, and World War II accompanied the Franklin County Bell. The Franklin County Bell is about 60 percent complete and is set to be unveiled at the Franklin County 11/30 Visitors Center, 15 South Main Street in Chambersburg, at 1:00 PM on September 20 . The public is invited to attend the unveiling.
Special guest of honor and Franklin County native son Sam Worley will be unveiling the Bell. Mr. Worley is a World War II Veteran, past commissioner of Franklin County, and former member of Chambersburg Borough Council. A 250th birthday cake will be shared with the public along with patriotic music and living history. The event is provided at no charge, compliments of the America250PA Franklin County Committee and the Franklin County Visitors Bureau.
Following the unveiling of Franklin County’s Bell Across PA, the bell will be available for display at countywide events and functions. On September 27, Franklin County’s Bell Across PA will be displayed at Mercersburg Townfest. A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at the restored 1884 Depot located at 106 N Washington St, in Gettysburg. The community gathered to launch this historic rail experience. The event highlighted messages from Brandy D. Christian, CEO of Patriot Rail, who emphasized community collaboration and the shared vision that brought this project to life.
The celebration opened with a performance of ‘America the Beautiful’ by Kendall Whittington, a vocal talent from Gettysburg College.
Voices from across the region—including Gettysburg Borough Mayor Rita Frealing, Robert Turnauckas, from Patriot Rail, President of Destiantion Gettysburg, Karl Pietrzak, Main Street Gettysburg President, Jill Sellers, and Robert Iuliano, President of Gettysburg College—spoke about the importance of this partnership-driven initiative. From tourism development to educational collaboration, each speaker echoed a commitment to honoring the past while building for the future.
The Gettysburg Excursion Railway opens to the public on September 1st, offering visitors a new way to explore the rich cultural and historical landscape of Gettysburg.
Gettysburg, PA – Tickets are now available for the 21st Annual Gettysburg Wine & Music Festival at Granite Hill Camping Resort, located at 3340 Fairfield Rd., Gettysburg on September 6 and 7.
Wine enthusiast and music lovers are invited to enjoy the perfect fall weekend in historic
Gettysburg while sampling and purchasing from 27 Pennsylvanian wineries and distilleries, shopping unique craft vendors, tasting delicious foods, and dancing to the region’s best live
music.
Ticket prices range from $30 for a single day general admission ticket to $50 for a 2-day
general admission ticket. Tickets bought at the gate are $35 each. Youth/Designated Driver

Burns will also discuss his newest documentary, The American Revolution (premiering November 16, 2025 on PBS) alongside a slate of award-winning filmmakers, historians, and public figures.

Hanover, PA – Little Fox Coffee & Books is proud to announce the launch of the Downtown Hanover First Friday Art Walk, a new monthly event celebrating the rich artistic talent of the Hanover area. The inaugural walk will take place Friday, August 1st, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM in downtown Hanover, and will continue on the first Friday of every month. This free, family-friendly event invites the community to explore downtown businesses transformed into gallery spaces, meet artists, and enjoy a vibrant evening of culture and connection.
The Art Walk is being organized by Little Fox Coffee & Books, who wanted to bring something new and meaningful to the area. “We are so excited to connect with other local art lovers and to bring more culture to the downtown arts area, as well as give more platforms and opportunities for our local artists to share their work with the community,” says Kiki Page, co-owner of Little Fox. “This is about building a creative, welcoming space for everyone. The hope is to build momentum each month, eventually turning First Fridays into a beloved Hanover tradition. We hope to help downtown Hanover feel a little more and more like the small town of Stars Hollow where you can stroll downtown with a coffee and enjoy the quaintness of the downtown shops and spaces.”
The first walk will feature five downtown stops with a wide array of artistic experiences. Little Fox Coffee & Books (125 Broadway) will be showing the work of Danielle Redden, a Hanover-based multi-disciplinary artist and art historian whose work spans printmaking, painting, and handcrafted gourd lamps. The Hanover Area Arts Guild (32 Carlisle Street) will host a “Meet the Artist” event with painter of primitives Tim Gasper, alongside an “Artist Attic” fundraiser where guests can take home member-contributed art in exchange for donations to scholarships or classroom materials. The Gallery at The Old Post Office (141 Broadway) will present a group exhibition on the theme of “sustenance,” featuring regional artists such as Dixie Brillhart, Matt Sheaffer, and Margaret Ramage. Additionally, The Serpent’s Key (28 Carlisle Street) will feature work by local artist Kayla Medina.
This monthly series aims to grow into a cornerstone of Hanover’s cultural scene, with a rotating lineup of artists and participating venues each month.
