Foot of the Mountain Farm & CSA Celebrates Farming at Great American Farmers Market

photo: Franklin County Visitors Bureau

Chambersburg, PA – Foot of the Mountain Farm and CSA participated in the USDA Great American Farmers Market, a week-long celebration of farming, family, and food. Situated  just behind the Washington Monument, the commemoration provided the Varisano family of Franklin County PA–owners of Foot of the Mountain Farm and CSA–an opportunity to experience the nation’s capitol as they shared the importance of farming and fresh food with visitors to the farmers market set up on the National Mall. Among the visitors to the Foot of the Mountain Farm stand were Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The Great American Farmer’s Market included fifty representatives from twenty-six states and spotlighted and celebrated the importance of agriculture in the United States. It is the first celebration and was held during the first week of August to coincide with National Farmers Market Week. Both underscore the importance of farming–past, present, and future–to the United States. The initiative is part of the national recognition of America’s 250th birthday.

Ken Burns to Headline 2026 Gettysburg Film Festival Honoring America’s 250th Anniversary

Filmmaker Ken Burns speaks during a press conference at the Gettysburg
Film Festival on May 8, 2025. He is joined by actor Martin Sheen, policy strategist Susan
Eisenhower, and author Jeff Shaara.

Gettysburg, PA — In the town synonymous with American history, the 2026 Gettysburg Film Festival will honor the birth of the United States. From April 2–4, 2026, this one-of-a-kind event will feature a powerful lineup of films, speakers, and conversations exploring the American Revolution, the nation’s founding, and the ties between 1776 and 1863.

Presented by Gettysburg History, the festival is made possible with support from key partners including the American Battlefield Trust, The Better Angels Society, and local collaborators such as The Gettysburg Film Commission, Destination Gettysburg, and the Dobbin House Tavern.

The 2026 festival will coincide with the 250th anniversary of the United States, offering a unique opportunity to reflect on the values at the heart of America. Renowned filmmaker Ken Burns, who serves as Chair of the Festival, will headline a series of screenings and special programs.

Burns will also discuss his newest documentary, The American Revolution (premiering November 16, 2025 on PBS) alongside a slate of award-winning filmmakers, historians, and public figures.

In a video released today, Ken Burns shared his excitement: “The 2026 festival will coincide with the 250th anniversary of the creation of the United States. Four score and seven years later, President Lincoln would of course travel to Gettysburg to deliver his famous address, rededicating our country to our founding principles…. I hope you can join us.”

“In these divisive times, there’s no better opportunity to return to the founding promises of our nation and examine what those promises still mean today,” said Andrew Dalton, President & CEO of Gettysburg History. “Gettysburg has always been a place to reckon with our past and imagine a brighter future. Our festival brings those conversations to life on the stage and on screen.”

“In 2026, the big screens of our small town will light up with the origin stories of America. In Gettysburg, we will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of our nation, dedicated to the best idea human beings have ever had – that all of us are entitled to ‘Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.’ Ken Burns, America’s storyteller, returns to share his brand new film series, The American Revolution. We will have a festival worthy of America’s  quarter-millenium. History and film lovers will join us in the fellowship offered in a darkened cinema to explore the American story on screen in this uniquely historic place,” said Gettysburg Film Festival Director Jake Boritt.

Details about special guests, film screenings, and ticketing will be announced later this year on the festival’s website.

The 2026 Gettysburg Film Festival will mark the event’s fourth year. The most recent festival, held in May 2025, commemorated the 80th anniversary of Allied victory in World War II and drew more than 8,000 attendees. Guests experienced unique historical film programming featuring Ken Burns, Susan Eisenhower, Martin Sheen, Stephen Lang, Trace Adkins, Judy Collins, and a host of acclaimed historians and filmmakers. Past festival themes have explored American presidential elections and celebrated the legacy of Ken Burns’s films. Founded by Jake Boritt and Ken Burns in collaboration with Gettysburg’s Majestic Theater, the festival is now presented and operated by Gettysburg History, a national initiative of the Adams County Historical Society.

Watch the full announcement and learn more at GettysburgFilmFestival.org.

Gettysburg, PA: A must-visit destination to celebrate America’s 250th

photo: Destination Gettysburg

Gettysburg, PA – In 2026, the small town that bore witness to some of the most pivotal moments in American history will take center stage for the nation’s 250th anniversary.

The story of America cannot be told without Gettysburg, where the bloodiest battle of the Civil War was fought, and where President Abraham Lincoln delivered the iconic Gettysburg Address. In the 16th president’s speech, he drew a direct connection between Gettysburg and the country’s founding with the words, “Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

Long after soldiers were laid to rest in the new national cemetery, millions of visitors continue to flock to this place each year to walk in the footsteps of history. From the preserved land of Gettysburg National Military Park to the charming downtown, the Gettysburg of today encapsulates a unique blend of past and present. To honor that history and commemorate America’s 250th, Gettysburg is preparing to welcome travelers from around the globe for a year-long series of events.

Beginning in January, Gettysburg’s America 250th commemoration will launch a vibrant lineup of events and immersive programs designed to bring history to life. From special battlefield tours and moving ceremonies to living history experiences and community-led celebrations, Gettysburg will offer visitors countless ways to connect with the past and celebrate the future.

Highlights throughout the year will include tributes to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who made Gettysburg his post-war home, as well as showcases of Adams County’s famed apple orchards and agricultural heritage. Visitors will also discover the compelling stories of Gettysburg’s townspeople, whose courage and resilience during and after the Civil War left a lasting mark on American history.

Adams County’s goal is to host 250 events in 2026, including but not limited to battle re-enactments, historical programs, and living history encampments, in addition to its annual Independence Day celebration. A highlight of the year will be a full re-creation of President Lincoln’s visit to Gettysburg on November 18-19, 2026 — an event that is expected to draw thousands to commemorate the president’s famous speech.

“Like so many other historic destinations across our country, Gettysburg is a place that Americans should visit to commemorate this important milestone anniversary,” said Carl Whitehill, chair of the Adams County steering commission for America 250PA. “When looking back over the country’s 250-year history, Gettysburg undoubtedly played a significant role in shaping our nation’s future, and we invite Americans and travelers from around the world to visit the place where America’s future hung in the balance.”

Just 90 minutes from Washington, D.C., and 2.5 hours from Philadelphia, Gettysburg invites visitors to not only learn about history but to stand where it was made and experience its lessons firsthand. As America marks 250 years of independence, Gettysburg offers a powerful reminder of the values and sacrifices that continue to define the nation.

Mason Dixon Chapter – A.B.A.T.E. of PA Donates $50,000 to Local Charities

Members of Mason Dixon Chapter – A.B.A.T.E. of PA present Olivia’s House staff with a $10,000 donation.

Hanover, PA – The Mason Dixon Chapter of the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education (A.B.A.T.E.) of Pennsylvania is donating $50,000 to several York County charitable organizations as part of its annual “Christmas in July – Christmas for Kids in York County” campaign.

On July 15, 2025, the chapter presented Olivia’s House, a grief and loss center for children, with a $10,000 donation during a special event held at their Hanover location, 101 Baltimore Street.

Michelle Fox, Development Director at Olivia’s House, shared her gratitude for the donation, saying: “This donation to our organization means the world to us. We are an independent non-profit, so all of the dollars that we raise go directly to supporting our no-cost grief education programs. All of the hard work that A.B.A.T.E. puts into doing their fundraisers year-round and supporting our mission goes directly to supporting all of those bereaved families who are walking through our doors. We are very grateful for their courageousness of reaching out to us in their time of need after the loss of a family member. With A.B.A.T.E. and all of their efforts, it is securing that the doors stay open and the lights stay on for all of the families that come through our doors.”

This event is one of several recent charitable efforts by the biker advocacy group. On June 7, 2025, the Harvest of Hope Food Pantry received a $10,000 donation during a community gathering at Goofy’s Eatery & Spirits in Spring Grove.

The remaining $30,000 in donations will be distributed on July 26, 2025, to three additional York County nonprofits:

Leg Up Farm – 4880 N Sherman St Ext, Mt. Wolf, PA

Big Brothers Big Sisters of York & Adams County – 227 W Market St, York, PA

Equiteam Support Services – 1200 S Pleasant Ave, Dallastown, PA

Each organization will receive $10,000 to support their missions of helping children and families in the region.

McMahon explains that the candidates can participate in two ways: by collecting donations in their own communities leading up to “Stuff the Bus”, and by physically accepting additional donated school supplies from the drive-through line and placing them into the bus.

“These folks have already expressed their support for our students by announcing their desire to serve on their local school board. Accepting donations at ‘Stuff the Bus’ allows candidates to supportAdams County’s students through this completely different, hands-on effort.” said McMahon. “This is also an opportunity to show the community that all sides of the political spectrum can work together for the betterment of our local youth.”
Donations can also be dropped off at over fifty different locations across Adams County through Friday, July 25. For a complete list of drop-off locations, please visit UWAC’s Facebook page. Monetary donations may also be given to United Way on line at www.uwadams.org.

Questions about specific school supplies needs should be directed to the United Way of Adams County at ekaltenbaugh@uwadams.org or (717) 334-5809.

“Stuff the Bus” is a first-time initiative to support the United Way’s annual Back to School Supply Drive. This initiative is being organized by GASD School Board candidate Dale Brennan in collaboration with United Way of Adams County. Candidates interested in participating may contact Brennan directly at FriendsofDaleBrennan@gmail.com.
“It’s all about the kids,” says Brennan.
