Exploring Gettysburg’s Third Ward Community

May 13 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Wednesday, May 13th, 3 to 5 p.m.

Join historians Jean Howard-Green, Tim Smith, and Andrew Dalton for a special walking tour through Gettysburg’s historic Third Ward, where generations of the town’s Black residents built lives, businesses, churches, and community.

Along the way, participants will explore sites connected to Gettysburg’s Black history from before the Civil War through the mid-20th century, including churches, businesses, Lincoln Cemetery, and the locations of homes once belonging to some of the town’s earliest Black residents, including Civil War veterans of the United States Colored Troops.

The tour will also include a behind-the-scenes look at the restoration of the Jack and Julia Hopkins House, the future home of Gettysburg’s new Black History Museum. Once the residence of a free Black family whose lives were intertwined with the story of the Underground Railroad and the Battle of Gettysburg, the Hopkins House will soon bring these powerful stories to life for visitors from around the world.

The tour will start and end at Lincoln Cemetery, Lincoln Lane and Long Lane, Gettysburg.

Registration is required. We hope you can join us.
