DESCRIPTION:Tour Ms. Hettie’s Kitchen Garden\nSunday\, June 28th\, 10-11 a.m.\nShriver House Museum\, 307 Baltimore St.\, Gettysburg\n \n\nHave you ever wanted to know what civilians would have grown in their garden during the Civil War? \nToday\, Hettie Shriver’s garden has been transported to the past\, and features the herbs\, plants and vegetables that Hettie would have grown herself in 1863. \nJoin Shriver House Tour Guide & Gardener\, Gayle Underwood\, for a morning spent in Hettie’s garden discussing historic plants\, herbal remedies\, & gardening techniques. Light refreshments will be provided. You are welcome to bring a chair or stool. In the event of rain or inclement weather\, the discussion will be held into the Garden Room\, just behind the Shriver House Gift Shop. \nAll participants will receive a plant from the garden to take home. \nThis event will take place Sunday\, June 28th from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Shriver House Museum\, 307 Baltimore Street. Tickets cost $15 for youth\, $18 for Gettysburg History members\, and $20 for general adult admission. Reserve your tickets here.

DESCRIPTION:James Pierce is perhaps best known as the father of Tillie Pierce\, the young heroine who authored At Gettysburg: What a Girl Saw and Heard of the Battle. Yet his story is interesting in its own right. \nOriginally from Maryland\, Pierce wore many hats in Gettysburg\, serving as a butcher\, grocer\, property owner\, and businessman. A neighbor of the Shriver family\, he was an eyewitness to sharpshooter action in the Shriver House attic during the Battle of Gettysburg. In addition\, Pierce was the father of four children\, including two sons who served in the Union Army. \nJoin Abbie Hoffman\, Director of the Shriver House Museum\, to explore the life and legacy of James Pierce.
