SUMMARY:Gettysburg on the American Stage with Richard Sautter
DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Gettysburg has been a fixture in American historical memory since 1863. Many people are familiar with how it has been depicted in fiction and on screen\, but how has it been represented in the theatre? As it happens\, both the Battle and the town have appeared on the stage on many occasions over the last 150 years. This presentation will examine these representations and explore how they reflect developments in theatre history and the reframing of issues of race\, gender\, and conflict in American popular culture. \nThis program is FREE/Members; $10/General Admission. Reservations are required\, and can be made here: https://113910.blackbaudhosting.com/113910/Gettysburg-on-the-American-Stage

SUMMARY:The Love Story of Jack Skelley and Jennie Wade
DESCRIPTION:The death of Jennie Wade\, a young woman killed while baking bread on the morning of July 3\, 1863\, is one of the most told civilians stories of the battle. Often told alongside the story of her tragic death is the story of her romance with Johnston H. Skelly\, Jr. of Company F\, 87th Pennsylvania Volunteers. And although the exact truth of their relationship may never be known\, new evidence continues to surface. Join historian Timothy H. Smith as he attempts to sort fact from fiction and analyze the true circumstances of the love story of Jack and Jennie. \nThis program is FREE/Members; $10/General Admission. SUMMARY:Gettysburg’s United States Colored Troops with Tim Smith
DESCRIPTION:The Emancipation Proclamation\, which took effect on January 1\, 1863\, established the United States Colored Troops (USCT). And although it took several months to create\, enlist and train these units\, these measures eventually resulted in the recruitment of over 170\,000 Black men\, many former slaves\, in the defense of the country. Over 100 of these men were born in\, recruited from\, or resided at one time in Adams County\, Pennsylvania\, with over 30 of them being buried in Gettysburg’s Lincoln Cemetery. Join Historian Timothy H. Smith as he discusses the stories of the military service of these often-overlooked veterans of the American Civil War. \nThis program is FREE/Members; $10/General Admission. SUMMARY:"Cease Firing!" Life and Death at The Swope Manor
DESCRIPTION:Drawing inspiration from Lt. William H. Pohlman’s reported final words—“Cease firing”—writer Kellie Gormly spent years researching the history of The Swope Manor\, a Gettysburg home that sheltered the town’s wealthiest family and served as the place where Pohlman died in 1863 after being wounded during Pickett’s Charge. Her work culminated in the book Cease Firing! Life and Death at The Swope Manor\, now in its second edition. Join Gormly on Saturday\, January 10th at 2 p.m. as she tells the intertwined stories of Pohlman\, the prominent Swope family\, and the house that connects them. During her talk\, Gormly will also share excerpts from some of Pohlman’s eloquent wartime letters\, which provide a fascinating look into the lieutenant’s experiences during the Civil War.\nFree for members; $10/general admission.

SUMMARY:The Cow on the Tracks: How One Small Mishap Changed the Gettysburg Campaign
DESCRIPTION:On the afternoon of June 24\, 1863\, 700 men of the 26th Pennsylvania Emergency Regiment were steaming towards Gettysburg. They had been ordered to the mountains west of Gettysburg as a blocking force against a possible Rebel Invasion of the county. As luck would have it\, an elderly woman was driving her cow on a railroad bridge crossing a gully over Swift Run\, east of town\, at the same time. Suddenly\, an unscheduled train carrying the 26th Pennsylvania appeared. Although the woman was able to reach safety\, the cow was struck and killed\, derailing the locomotive and sending several cars over the embankment. As a result\, the 26th Pennsylvania never reached its assigned destination. Join Timothy H. Smith as he discusses how a cow on the tracks may have altered the course of the Gettysburg Campaign. \nFree/Members; $10/General Admission.
