SUMMARY:The Lost Letters of Dr. J.W.C. O'Neal
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, Oct. 24\, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\nBattlefield Overlook Event Center\, 625 Biglerville Road\n\nIn August\, Gettysburg History received one of the most extraordinary archival donations in the organization’s history: more than 40 original letters written by Southern families seeking information about—and\, in many cases\, the return of—the remains of loved ones killed at Gettysburg. \nRecently featured in The Washington Post and in an in-depth story by Gettysburg History\, these remarkable letters offer an intimate glimpse into the long aftermath of the battle and the families who were still searching for answers years after the fighting ended. \nJoin Gettysburg History Director of Education Tim Smith\, National Civil War Museum CEO Wayne Motts\, and Gettysburg History President & CEO Andrew Dalton for a special program exploring the stories behind these newly discovered letters and the remarkable efforts of Gettysburg physician Dr. J.W.C. O’Neal to identify and recover the Confederate dead. \nGuests will also have a rare opportunity to view selections from the original collection. Registration is required. \nThe cost to attend is $10 for Gettysburg History members and $20 for general admission. Reserve your tickets here. The program will be held on Saturday\, October 24th from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Battlefield Overlook Event Center\, 625 Biglerville Road\, Gettysburg\, PA.

SUMMARY:Lincoln and Whitman: A Conversation Across Time
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, Nov. 14\, 7 to 8:30 p.m.\nBattlefield Overlook Event Center\, 625 Biglerville Road\, Gettysburg\n\nJoin actors Stephen Lang and Billy Campbell for this special program moderated by Harold Holzer. \nTwo of the greatest writers of the 19th century—Abraham Lincoln and Walt Whitman—never formally met during the years they both lived in wartime Washington\, D.C. (though they came close). Yet they had a profound connection. Lincoln’s increasingly lean prose came to mirror Whitman’s iconic style and reflect his patriotism. And Whitman’s laudatory poetry enhanced Lincoln’s reputation as the “captain” who saved the ship of state during the rebellion. \nIn this all-new program—featuring dramatic readings culled entirely from Lincoln’s and Whitman’s own words—the two men speak\, as if to each other and certainly to us\, on the great issues of the day: war\, peace\, courage\, union\, friendship\, and martyrdom. \nRegistration is required. The cost to attend is $15 for Gettysburg History members and Lincoln Forum members\, and $25 for general admission. Reserve your tickets here. This event will be held on Saturday\, November 14th beginning at 7 p.m. at the Beyond the Battle Museum\, Battlefield Overlook Event Center\, 625 Biglerville Road\, Gettysburg.
