SUMMARY:Fall Oyster Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:A fall family event for the entire community\n\nCrisp autumn air\, vibrant colors\, live music\, amazing food\, and fun for the whole family: The Fall Oyster Festival is back\, and this year it’s bigger and better than ever\, thanks to a generous group of sponsors\, including Presenting Sponsor White Rose Bar & Grill. Join us in the heart of historic downtown York for a perfect fall Sunday you won’t want to miss. \n\nYour perfect fall day starts here\n\nThere’s no better way to celebrate the season than spending a Sunday afternoon outside surrounded by the beauty of a York autumn. The Colonial Complex provides a stunning historic backdrop for a day filled with great energy\, warm flavors\, and community connection. \nWhether you’re strolling with the kids\, exploring with friends\, or making it a date day\, the Fall Oyster Festival has everything you need for an unforgettable fall outing. Never tried an oyster before? This is your chance. Whether you eat them by the dozen or lean more toward land-locked fare\, we have you covered! \nAn event linked to York’s history\nIn 1974\, the History Center threw an oyster-themed party. The occasion: the 10th anniversary of the restoration of the Gates House and the Plough Tavern\, two colonial-era landmarks that anchor our campus in the heart of downtown York. Why oysters? Because the restoration work uncovered layers of oyster shells. Oysters were a common\, inexpensive food item in colonial York. For that first Oyster Festival\, the community showed up. They’ve been showing up ever since. \nCome to this year’s 52nd Fall Oyster Festival and see what makes this one of York’s most anticipated fall traditions. \nFind us in the heart of downtown York\nThe Fall Oyster Festival takes place at the Colonial Complex\, nestled in the heart of downtown York along Pershing Avenue between Market and Philadelphia streets. It’s a gorgeous\, walkable\, historic setting that is close to York’s high-quality shops and restaurants.

SUMMARY:Gettysburg's Little Round Top: A Photographic Journey
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, Oct. 17\, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.\nBattlefield Overlook Event Center\, 625 Biglerville Road\, Gettysburg\n\nOn July 2\, 1863\, an unassuming rocky hill in Gettysburg witnessed perhaps the most famous counterattack of the Civil War. Through their bravery and bloodshed\, Little Round Top would be forever enshrined in American history. \nUsing early maps\, illustrations\, and photographs\, historian Timothy H. Smith will explore the history of this iconic Gettysburg battlefield location — from its humble beginnings to the profound impact it continues to have on visitors today. \nThe discussion will be held Saturday\, October 17th from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Battlefield Overlook Event Center\, 625 Biglerville Road\, Gettysburg. \nRegistration is required. Tickets are free for Gettysburg History members and $10 for general admission. Reserve your tickets here.

SUMMARY:Young Lewis Miller - Presentation and Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Attention Writers’ Roundtable\, \nOn October 15 at 6:30 p.m. Jay Davidson will discuss his recently published book Young Lewis Miller: A Boy’s Life in the 1800s.  The book is available for purchase at the History Center and through their online store here. \nJay will sign copies of his book following the presentation.  Registration is recommended. \nJay will also sign books at the YCHC Fall Oyster Festival on Oct. 18 from 11 to 4 p.m. \nWhat was it like to be a young boy growing up in the early 1800s in York? Author Jay Davidson helps answer that question in the new book he wrote and edited Young Lewis Miller\, A Boy’s Life in the 1800s. Readers can follow Lewis Miller’s drawings as he grows from a 3-year-old boy to a 21-year-old young adult in this richly illustrated book. Published by the York County History Center and timed for the nation’s 250th anniversary\, the book is aimed at young readers with the hope that it will bring this noted York County folk artist’s work to new generations. \nJames Latimer (Jay) Davidson grew up in York. His banking career took him from Manhattan to Hong Kong\, Boston and Beijing. Now living in Southern California\, his interest in genealogy has led to a renewed appreciation of the art and history of York County.

SUMMARY:2026 International Peace Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Gettysburg\, PA — The World Affairs Council of Harrisburg will present the 2026 International Peace Symposium at Gettysburg College on Saturday\, September 19\, from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the CUB Ballroom\, with the Eisenhower Institute serving as a co-sponsor. The program\, titled 2026 International Peace Symposium: Peace or Forever Wars? Reclaiming America’s Soft Power & Diplomacy\, will examine America’s approach to diplomacy and soft power and its role in the world. \nThe symposium will consider America’s international standing since September 11\, 2001\, including relationships with and strains between the United States and its allies. Discussion will also address tariffs and international conflict\, along with broader questions about how the United States has used diplomatic influence and soft power and how those tools might affect its global role. \nThe program will consider whether renewed reliance on diplomacy and soft power could strengthen American leadership and influence\, presenting these issues as subjects for discussion rather than settled conclusions. The symposium concludes Eisenhower Institute Democracy Week and connects international affairs to the theme America at 250: Our Democracy\, Our World\, which examines American democracy at home and abroad. \nThe Eisenhower Institute at Gettysburg College connects aspiring young leaders with public policy experts to discover their passion and tackle society’s most challenging issues. We are nonpartisan\, inspired by President Eisenhower’s approach of engaging diverse people and ideas to find common ground and take action.
